Vaping devices

Some types of this item cannot go in the trash in District towns per District Ordinance

Disposal Options

Vaping devices such as E-cigarettes, vape pens, vapes, and e-cigs should be managed as hazardous waste and are accepted at the HazWaste Center at the District Transfer Station for free without an appointment from residents. Schools and businesses should call for disposal information at (802) 388-2333.

Liquid nicotine is toxic and should not come in contact with skin or faces. Damaged batteries can cause burns or other injuries.

Hazardous waste includes any unused product that is poisonous, reactive, corrosive, or flammable. You can easily identify hazardous products by reading packaging labels: look for keywords such as Warning! Danger! Poison! Caution! Improper disposal of these products is illegal and poses a risk to human health and the environment. Do not pour hazardous waste down the drain or discard it with regular household trash. Water treatment plants and septic systems are not designed to contain or remove these chemicals.

Damaged, Defective, or Swollen Batteries

All damaged, defective, and swollen (puffy) batteries should be managed carefully. These items are fire hazards and should never be disposed of in the trash or recycling. If you have a damaged, defective, or swollen battery:

  • Place the battery or device in a closed, water-tight storage container such as a plastic pail or bin. Add sand, vermiculite, or kitty litter as soon as possible.
  • Always wear gloves and eye protection when handling swollen or damaged batteries. Damaged batteries can cause burns or other injuries.
  • Do not store damaged, defective, or recalled batteries for extended periods. Bring them to the District Transfer Station during operating hours.
