Addison County Solid Waste Management District |
The Addison County Solid Waste Management District (ACSWMD) recently selected three winners of an art contest promoting awareness of the dangers of backyard trash burning. The contest began last fall, soliciting original artwork from area students ranging from kindergarten to 12th grade. Awards were given to winners within three age groups (grades K-4, 5-8, and 9-12). The winning prize of a check for $100 was given to Ryan Miller (Mary Hogan Elementary School, Grade 3), Rosalie Wright-Lapin (Middlebury Union Middle School, Grade 8), and Emilie Boucher (Middlebury Union High School, Grade 12).
The contest, funded by a grant from the Vermont Agency of Natural Resources, was part of a larger campaign that also included radio and print advertising to promote responsible waste disposal by illustrating the detrimental health effects and environmental damage caused by backyard trash burning. Backyard burning of trash releases large amounts of dioxins and furans - two of the most toxic, cancer-causing substances known. Backyard trash burning is reported to be the leading source of dioxin emissions in Vermont.
Students were provided with a blank template for creating their artwork, along with a series of backyard burning facts that teachers used as points of discussion in class. According to Don Maglienti, Program Coordinator for ACSWMD, “The contest was a great success. With 370 entries, it was difficult to select just three winners. If our campaign convinces just one household to stop burning trash, then we all win.”
The three winning designs will be printed on refrigerator magnets and distributed by the District at various future public events. Click on artwork below to open a larger image of the winning drawing.
